EOTO Technological Presentations

Learning from your peers can be critical to growing one's understanding of a topic. Listening to one who has done a significant amount of research can be very beneficial. Listening and understanding the many technologies from my peers during their presentation gave me a better understanding of the history, impact, and future of many of these developed technologies

The one that I found most intriguing that sparked my interest was the development of the first smartphone specifically the iPhone, as this is the most prevalent technology that I use. With over 1.3 billion iPhone users and their makers, Apple are the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. Now diving into the
founding of the first iPhone, Steve Jobs the creator of Apple found a problem, that needed to be solved with previous cell phones. He concluded they were too big, possessed a small screen, and had to be charged constantly while possessing small amounts of data storage. This led him to create the iPhone that was released on June 29th, 2007. It blended how the mobile phone, iPod, Internet, and communication into a singular device which would in fact revolutionize the technology.

The features of the first iPhone are immense while possessing many abilities compared to previous other phones. Having a multi-touch display fixed the problem that Steve Jobs stated saying the screen was too small. This allowed for different applications to be brought up and put in depending on a person's interest at that moment. The iPhone OS was the advanced operating system for the iPhone and it allowed it to read code at a rapid rate. Perfecting the method of calling, texting, and voicemail allowed for communication to happen. Lastly possessing Safari which was Apple's own internet browsing search engine allowed a person to have direct access to the internet in their pocket. These applications and abilities aided in many of the user's lives.

Seeing the growth of iPhones since its development over the last 17 years has been immense. Looking another 17 years into the future it's going to be very exciting seeing the future of the devices and new capabilities they may possess roaring into the future coming all the way from Steve Jobs and the development of the first smartphone.

Invasion of Privacy?

Social media has been at the forefront of many people's lives with around 5.22 billion users that spend around two hours and twenty minutes daily it can be seen social media is very popular. With all the users and benefits there do come with negatives that the everyday user is unaware of which could potentially put them at risk. Like everything there comes risk with using any form of social media however, it appears lately the risk has increased through targeted data leaking that directly infringes on privacy. As stated in the Ted Talks, these accounts are easily accessible by giving direct insight into the life of a person. In a single post nowadays someone could find out where they are from, who they are friends with, what they like to do, and their age. These are grave threats to people who want to inflict harm, as much of this information should remain private and now for the whole digital world to find if they infact want to. Another risk stated directly in the Ted Talks is that as social media and technology have advanced it has directly influenced the risk of everything we search up and post. As these major corporations have technology that allows for the followings of what the individual likes and doesn't like which allows for their media to be catered to what the person is like. This is only possible through the technology following what a person searches, likes, and follows. This is a direct infringement on a person's privacy as our data is so easily accessible to these companies just on that basis. These data can give a lot of insight into our lives and can be easily accessed by the government, job agencies, and corporations. There needs to be higher education for the public about the risk that comes with using social media, and the data that could be accessed

Privacy is essential to everyone, and I believe there are ways to combat potential infringes on these privacies. First off when using social media, it is essential to monitor who you let follow or subscribe to your account. Unknown accounts pose potential dangers, as they could be trying to gain information about individuals that they may have not previously known unless they have been allowed to follow your account. To combat this, make sure your accounts are privatized while keeping a track record of who can access your accounts. Also, passwords are essential to keeping people who shouldn't be in your accounts out of them. Having a strong password will protect individuals from potential hacks that may take place. Looking towards the future it is essential to protect our people's privacy by understanding the risks of certain posts and following and how it could affect the future. By adding safer methods that protect our privacy and data while being more careful on these applications it will allow for a world where everyone can live a privatized life while connecting through the means that social media has to offer.

The First Personal Computer

 Intro

Over the last two hundred years, there has been a revolution in developing new technology that has led to the advancement of our world. However, one technological development may be more essential to the everyday user than others. This item was the creation of the first personal computer.

Back in the day, computers were made for specialized fields. The majority lay in the government, military, and scientists while not being available to the common user. The computers these specialized fields possessed were also just not practical to the common everyday American. They were very large and required immense amounts of power that just weren't used in the common household.

Altair 8800

This would all change in the year 1974 when a man named Ed Roberts along with the company he worked for Micro Instrumentation Telemetry System (MITS) created the first personal computer. The device would be named the Altair 8800 which was sold for 395 dollars which was sold as a kit, while the assembled sold for 495 dollars

There was a variety of different abilities the computer would possess. The Altair 8800 included a two type memory program while possessing a specialized coding system, and the ability to create simulations whether it be for work or entertainment. The creation led to the first personal computer where everyday individuals had the ability to use.

Today and looking to the future

Around fifty years later, personal computers have progressed immensely from their days as an Altair 8800. Nowadays personalized computers have significant amounts of software processors and hardware that allow for coding to be processed quickly while being able to store a lot of data and different applications. Having the internet as your feet has also been revolutionized as former computers didn't possess that ability, now any individual can have a question they may have answered. Also with the development of streaming and gaming now, individuals can be entertained through streaming sites like Netflix, and Hulu that allow people to be able to watch their favorite movies or tv shows. This applies to gaming as well, as through the application of STEAM people can download their favorite game, and have the ability to play. The personal computer has also revolutionized working at the home, through emailing and differing
communication methods. Employees are able to receive documents and be able to work on them while possessing the ability to conference with other employees through Zoom. These abilities only seem to be growing with potential

Looking towards the future, computers are rearing towards being embedded with Artificial Intelligence. This will allow for complicated data to be analyzed in near seconds while understanding and detecting patterns that have been personalized to the individual. Through a newer technology in development called Neuralink by Elon Musk plans to one day have computers controlled through one's thoughts. The future of personal computers appears to be heading in a strong direction
