Invasion of Privacy?

Social media has been at the forefront of many people's lives with around 5.22 billion users that spend around two hours and twenty minutes daily it can be seen social media is very popular. With all the users and benefits there do come with negatives that the everyday user is unaware of which could potentially put them at risk. Like everything there comes risk with using any form of social media however, it appears lately the risk has increased through targeted data leaking that directly infringes on privacy. As stated in the Ted Talks, these accounts are easily accessible by giving direct insight into the life of a person. In a single post nowadays someone could find out where they are from, who they are friends with, what they like to do, and their age. These are grave threats to people who want to inflict harm, as much of this information should remain private and now for the whole digital world to find if they infact want to. Another risk stated directly in the Ted Talks is that as social media and technology have advanced it has directly influenced the risk of everything we search up and post. As these major corporations have technology that allows for the followings of what the individual likes and doesn't like which allows for their media to be catered to what the person is like. This is only possible through the technology following what a person searches, likes, and follows. This is a direct infringement on a person's privacy as our data is so easily accessible to these companies just on that basis. These data can give a lot of insight into our lives and can be easily accessed by the government, job agencies, and corporations. There needs to be higher education for the public about the risk that comes with using social media, and the data that could be accessed

Privacy is essential to everyone, and I believe there are ways to combat potential infringes on these privacies. First off when using social media, it is essential to monitor who you let follow or subscribe to your account. Unknown accounts pose potential dangers, as they could be trying to gain information about individuals that they may have not previously known unless they have been allowed to follow your account. To combat this, make sure your accounts are privatized while keeping a track record of who can access your accounts. Also, passwords are essential to keeping people who shouldn't be in your accounts out of them. Having a strong password will protect individuals from potential hacks that may take place. Looking towards the future it is essential to protect our people's privacy by understanding the risks of certain posts and following and how it could affect the future. By adding safer methods that protect our privacy and data while being more careful on these applications it will allow for a world where everyone can live a privatized life while connecting through the means that social media has to offer.
